Best Free Text-to-Speech App for Your Reading

A free plan should be judged against your normal reading week. If you listen to one article each morning, a monthly audio allowance might be enough. For a long novel, you may prefer an ongoing free voice even if the initial trial offers voices you like more. Neither arrangement is automatically better; the limit needs to be clear before you import your reading list.

• Check the voice and language available after any allowance expires.
• Try a complete chapter, including pause, resume and screen locking.
• Check whether speed, downloads or document scanning require payment.
• Distinguish a free plan from an automatically renewing paid trial.

Local speech processing can avoid a cloud narration request, but it does not dictate a company's prices. An offline app can charge; a cloud service can offer a useful free tier.

On current iPhone software, look under Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak; older versions call this Spoken Content. Apple's reading guidecovers Speak Screen and Speak Selection, including highlighting and speed controls. On Mac, enable Speak selection in Accessibility; the default shortcut is Option–Esc.

These are sensible first choices for text already open in another app. Their usefulness depends on whether that app exposes readable text. Test your actual book or page rather than assuming a screenshot, locked file or complicated PDF will work. A dedicated reader is useful when you want imports and a saved reading position in one place.

You can import DRM-free EPUBs and PDFs, keep your reading position on that device, and follow the spoken words. Premium adds voice choice and controls such as adjustable speed and a sleep timer; those are not all part of the permanent free tier.

Narration happens locally and books are not uploaded to a speech server. The app also sends crash/performance diagnostics and has usage analytics. Release 1.12 has no visible in-app switch for these diagnostics and analytics. Local narration is a narrower claim than "no data collection."

For occasional on-screen reading, try the system controls first. For browser-based documents, test NaturalReader's free voices with a representative file. For a library of books on an Apple device, try LoudReader and listen to its permanent free voices before judging the plan by the studio-voice trial.
