What is A Pair of Blue Eyes about?
Elfride Swancourt, a vicar's daughter in remote coastal Cornwall, has lived too little to know her own heart. When a young architect arrives to restore her father's church, she falls for him with her whole untested soul, but her father's snobbery forces the romance underground, and a botched elopement leaves a secret in her past. Then a second man enters her life: an older, formidable literary critic who happens to be her first love's revered mentor, and who prizes above all things a woman no one has loved before.
Hardy spins this triangle across cliffs and churchyards with mounting tension. One scene, with a man hanging from a cliff face while Elfride improvises a rescue, remains a small masterpiece of suspense. But the real subject is crueler: how men idealize women, and what those ideals do to a real one. An early, underrated Hardy with one of his most quietly devastating endings, and a strong choice for listeners who want the full tragic Wessex experience in a shorter span than his famous doorstops.
