What is Adventures of Huckleberry Finn about?
Huck Finn has been adopted, civilized, and scrubbed nearly to death, so when his violent father turns up to drag him back, Huck fakes his own murder and lights out. On an island in the Mississippi he runs into Jim, a man escaping slavery, and the two of them push a raft into the current and let the river carry them. What follows is one of the great journeys in American literature: feuding families, drifting con men, moonlit nights on the water, and trouble at every landing.
Told entirely in Huck's own voice (funny, sharp, and unschooled) the novel builds to a quiet moral crisis: everything Huck has been taught says he should turn Jim in, and everything he has lived on that raft says otherwise. Twain's masterpiece was made to be heard; Huck talks straight to you the whole way down the river.
