What is Sonnets from the Portuguese about?
When Elizabeth Barrett began exchanging letters with Robert Browning, she was an invalid in her father's house, half-convinced her life was already over. These forty-four sonnets are the private record of what happened next: disbelief that love had arrived so late, fear of burdening him, and then, sonnet by sonnet, the astonished surrender to happiness. She showed them to Browning only after they were married; the coy title, suggesting a translation, was a screen for how nakedly personal they are.
The sequence contains some of the most famous lines in English poetry ("How do I love thee? Let me count the ways") but the real reward is hearing the whole arc in order, one of the few great sonnet cycles written by a woman about a love that actually, historically, came true. Short enough for a single sitting, and best taken aloud, the way love poems are meant to be.
