What is Thuvia, Maid of Mars about?
On Burroughs's dying Mars, Carthoris (son of the great John Carter) loves Thuvia, princess of Ptarth. She is promised to another man, and honor seals both their mouths. Then Thuvia is kidnapped, Carthoris is framed for the crime, and two empires begin sliding toward war while he races his flier across dead sea bottoms to find her.
The chase leads to Lothar, one of the eeriest inventions in early science fiction: a forgotten city whose last inhabitants defend themselves with entire armies of phantom bowmen willed into existence by pure thought. Short, fast, and unapologetically pulpy, this fourth Barsoom adventure is planetary romance in its purest form, with banths, airships, swordplay, and a princess who is nobody's damsel.
