What is Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave about?
In 1845, a twenty-seven-year-old fugitive published the plain facts of his own life and detonated them under American slavery. Douglass recounts what he witnessed and endured as an enslaved child and young man in Maryland (the separations, the cold, the calculated cruelty) in prose whose control makes it hit harder. At its center is a turning point he identifies precisely: a slaveholder's furious declaration that literacy would ruin a slave, which taught the boy exactly what reading was worth, and set him to learn it by any means available.
He describes the fight in which he resolved to be a slave in law only, and, protecting those who helped him, deliberately withholds the details of his escape north. The Narrative became one of the most consequential books in American history and remains astonishingly alive: clear, furious, precise. Hearing it in a human voice restores it to what it originally was, the testimony of a man who spoke it from platforms across the free states.
