What is The Confessions of St. Augustine about?
Long before the modern memoir existed, a North African bishop sat down and told God the truth about himself. Augustine recounts his youth in Roman Africa with startling candor. There are the pears he stole just for the thrill of stealing, the ambitions and love affairs of his student years in Carthage, the fashionable philosophies he tried on and discarded, and the mother, Monica, who followed him across the Mediterranean praying he would change. What emerges is not a saint's press release but the anatomy of a restless mind arguing with itself.
The famous conversion scene in a Milan garden is only the hinge; the later chapters open out into meditations on memory and time that philosophers still wrestle with sixteen centuries on. Because the whole book is written as one side of an intimate conversation, it is unusually natural to hear aloud. You are simply listening in.
