What is Treasure Island about?
An old seaman with a sea-chest and a terror of one-legged men takes a room at the Admiral Benbow inn, and when he dies, young Jim Hawkins finds in that chest the map every pirate in England would kill for. Soon Jim is cabin boy on a ship bound for a distant island, sailing with a crew hired a little too easily by a one-legged cook named Long John Silver, the most charming man aboard and quite possibly the most dangerous.
Stevenson wrote the book that fixed pirates in the world's imagination (the map with the X, the black spot, the parrot, the buried treasure) and it still outruns every imitation. But its secret weapon is Silver himself: warm, funny, treacherous, and never entirely villain or friend, even to the boy who trusts him. A perfect adventure at a perfect pace, and one of the all-time great stories to hear told.
